Research
Neil has published over 250 peer-reviewed research papers, and been a principal investigator on over 30 EU, EPSRC and bilaterally funded research projects worth over £64 million, directly managing over £10 million of this income at City.
His current research takes place in two key areas.
1. CO-CREATIVE AI PRODUCTS FOR PROFESSIONAL WORK
Neil constructs and applies creativity theories and models to design, implement and evaluate co-creative AI products that support human creative thinking in diverse professional domains. This research is delivered through CebAI, the Centre for Creativity enabled by AI that Neil founded and directs using funding support from Research England's Development Fund. The digital products are implemented as computational services, mobile apps and website to support creative thinking in professional domains that include product and service design, risk management in health-and-safety, business consulting, social care, elite sports coaching, and journalism. Users of results from this research include journalists at award winning newspapers such as Hordaland as shown here, production line staff at CNH Industrial, a part of the FCA Group, business consultants at Oxentia and football coaches at Sunderland AFC. This research underpins the JECT.AI start-up launched in the news and content creation sectors. Examples of the emerging co-creative AI tools include Sport Sparks, Design Sparks, Business Sparks and Bright Sparks.
2. SPECIFYING AND DESIGNING COMPLEX DIGITAL SYSTEMS
Neil constructs and uses theories and models in requirements engineering to design and evaluate new methods and software tools to support front-end analysis work. These methods and tools support tasks such as goal modelling and analysis, scenario-led requirements discovery, and predicting the political and other impacts of requirements-led organisational change. Users of this research have included the UK’s National Air Traffic Service, Rolls Royce and IBM.
