Strategic Themes and White Papers

Bayes Business School supports a broad range of research across management, finance and actuarial science. Curiosity and independent enquiry are central to this work. Alongside this breadth, we are bringing colleagues together to address complex problems confronting business and society that require contributions from different disciplines and areas of expertise.

Our four strategic research themes are AI and the Future of Business, The Future of Finance and Insurance, Tackling Societal Challenges, and Adapting to a Transforming World. They provide an overarching focus for collaboration across the School, complementing the research pursued by individual academics and research centres. We continue to support research beyond these themes, and new themes may emerge as our work develops.

AI is evolving at unprecedented speed. As new issues and approaches continually emerge, its growing capabilities raise fundamental questions about how organisations work. This theme examines the organisational changes needed to use AI effectively and responsibly. Our research explores its role in innovation and entrepreneurship, its implications for work, and its applications across finance, insurance, supply chains and healthcare.

Finance and insurance enable households and businesses to invest and plan for the future. Technological change creates new possibilities for these services, while climate, cyber and geopolitical risks test them. This theme examines how banking, insurance, accounting and corporate finance are changing in response. Our research investigates the opportunities offered and questions raised by AI, digital platforms and new asset classes.

Longer lives, effective healthcare and lower-carbon economies are widely shared ambitions. This theme brings together research on the economic sustainability of ageing, health system resilience, decarbonising trade and supply chains, and responsible enterprise. Our work ranges from financing long-term care and improving healthcare delivery to reducing shipping emissions and examining how businesses can meet responsibilities beyond shareholder interests alone.

Organisations make decisions using assumptions about markets, institutions and the behaviour of others. When assumptions become unreliable, established approaches to strategy and leadership need to be reconsidered. This theme examines how businesses and policymakers respond to fundamental change. Our research addresses geopolitical risk and global supply chains, expertise and disinformation, the role of developing economies, and sustainability disclosure and finance.

About the white paper series

The series begins with four positioning papers. They introduce the strategic themes, draw on existing research and identify questions for further investigation. They also introduce contributing academics and opportunities for collaboration.

Further papers will present findings and insights from research across Bayes, including work within and beyond the four themes. The series will develop as projects progress, new collaborations form and further areas of enquiry emerge.
