Mastering leadership: How a degree apprenticeship at Bayes accelerated my career
Álvaro shares his transformative journey through the Executive Master’s in Leadership at Bayes. With a background in Psychology and Marketing and extensive experience across industries, he found a degree apprenticeship that refined his leadership skills and accelerated his career
My name is Álvaro Lozano, and I’m originally from Barcelona. My academic background is in Psychology and Marketing, and over the years, I have pursued three master’s degrees. However, the most transformative was the Executive Master’s in Leadership at Bayes, which directly propelled me into my current role as Head of SEO in a technology company.
Having worked across various industries and major companies, I realised that to reach the next stage of my career, I needed to invest in top-tier education. I was looking for a programme that would refine my leadership skills while equipping me with the strategic tools to accelerate my career and unlock future opportunities. The Executive Master’s in Leadership at Bayes was the perfect fit, and I am confident that choosing this degree appprenticeship was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Balancing Work, Life, and Studies
Juggling work, personal commitments, and academic responsibilities was no easy feat, especially with the added challenge of the Covid pandemic. However, with dedication, organisation, and an unwavering passion for learning, I managed to maintain a balance. The master’s programme was both a professional and personal goal for me, and it reinforced my belief that with determination and focus, any goal is achievable. Being based in London for the past ten years also made managing the programme’s demands a bit easier.
Experience in the programme
The experience was transformative. I discovered that true leadership is about service, valuing others, and fostering collaboration. Effective leadership is rooted in human decency—connecting with people, inspiring them towards a common goal, and creating a culture of trust, respect, and empathy. Leadership is about recognising each person's value, empowering them, and fostering a culture of trust, respect, and empathy.
There were many significant moments during the programme, but none compared to my graduation day. With my parents and fiancée by my side, it felt like reaching the summit of Everest after months of intense effort. It was truly one of the happiest days of my life.
I have always been drawn to leadership, but the Exective Master's in Leadership refined my approach. It provided me with the tools, strategies, and confidence to lead effectively. Today, I manage a team of 25 people, and the knowledge I gained from Bayes has made me a much stronger leader. Leadership is not about authority but about unlocking talent, offering guidance, and enabling people to thrive in their roles.
Every professor and classmate contributed to my learning experience in unique ways. It was the collective insights, experiences, and expertise of everyone involved that truly shaped my journey, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
Career impact & growth
The impact of this programme on my career was immediate. Shortly after completing the master’s, I was promoted, and now, I receive weekly job offers via LinkedIn. The Bayes name carries significant weight in the industry, strengthening both my CV and my confidence in professional settings. If you check my LinkedIn profile, you’ll see the Bayes logo in my picture—that’s how proud I am of this programme.
Even while studying, I started implementing what I learned. I introduced new team dynamics, applied leadership strategies, and engaged in conversations with senior management with much greater confidence. The case studies we worked on were particularly valuable in preparing me for real-world scenarios.
Another exciting milestone I am now pursuing is becoming a lecturer at Bayes. I have already taught two SEO classes and aspire to contribute even more to the programme in the future. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job has been mentoring and empowering my team to work with greater autonomy and confidence. Many companies underestimate the impact of strong leadership, but it directly influences morale, retention, and performance. I have seen first-hand how effective leadership transforms a team, and it is a lesson I will carry with me for the rest of my career.
The Executive Master’s in Leadership has opened numerous opportunities, accelerating my professional growth and preparing me for bigger challenges ahead. I am still young, with many dreams and goals ahead, and this programme has accelerated my professional growth. Your opportunities depend on how well-prepared you are, and the programme has equipped me for bigger challenges ahead.
My leadership philosophy is simple: without service, there is no leadership.
Advice & reflections
If you are considering this programme, my advice is simple: do not hesitate. If you aspire to be a better professional and leader, this Master’s is a game-changer. It offers high-quality education, exceptional professors and classmates, and cutting-edge leadership insights.
However, this programme is not for those who prefer to stay in their comfort zone. It is designed for ambitious professionals who want to lead and make a difference. If you are serious about your career and ready to serve, lead, and grow, this is the perfect programme for you.
One of the standout aspects of Bayes is their commitment to involving alumni in the programme. They provided me with the opportunity to teach SEO to Master’s students—an experience I deeply cherish and a personal dream come true. Very few universities offer this level of engagement, and I am incredibly grateful for it.
Learning never stops. While AI is changing many things, leadership is something a machine cannot replicate. It requires human connection, creativity, and emotional intelligence.
A special thank you to Ruth Velenski, Head of Corporate Development, for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to contribute.
