A whole new world: why Disney's investment in OpenAI signals a new era for digital co-creation
Earlier this week, Disney announced a landmark $1 billion deal with OpenAI that will enable users to bring characters from its many franchises to life via Chat GPT and Sora – its video-generation tool.
In a first for worldwide studio animation, Disney fans will be able to create their own licenced content from some of its most popular franchises including Marvel and Pixel.
Simone Ferriani, Professor of Entrepreneurship at Bayes Business School, said the move opens another set of floodgates in the production of entertainment.
“Disney’s investment in OpenAI marks the moment one of Hollywood’s most guarded intellectual property fortresses swings open to mass co-creation,” said Professor Ferriani.
“Fans are now able to generate their own micro-stories with Mickey Mouse, Iron Man or Grogu at the tap of a prompt. The move could very well cultivate new creative talent, inspire next-generation storytellers and broaden the types of voices that can contribute meaningfully to beloved franchises.”
Brand co-creation through fan-led content is not a new phenomenon, but Professor Ferriani believes the access and breadth of Disney’s latest storytelling accessibility will take things up a level.
“It is worth noting we have been here before,” he continued.
“When LEGO first invited users to submit and design their own sets through ‘LEGO Ideas’, it sparked a wave of co-creation that revitalised the company’s brand. Minecraft also grew into a cultural phenomenon largely because it embraced user-generated worlds and mods.
“For Disney this is more than marketing, it is a strategic bet that future cultural relevance will hinge on openness, not control.
“From OpenAI’s perspective, the deal is equally transformative. Gaining access to Disney’s globally recognised characters provides Sora with a legitimacy boost no AI company has ever secured. In doing so, it sends a signal that AI-generated video is not a futuristic fringe curiosity, but a tool sanctioned by the most powerful studio in entertainment.
“With careful guardrails and strong creator protections, the partnership between Disney and OpenAI could redefine how audiences engage with stories, shifting them from passive consumers and viewers to active participants in an ever-expanding creative ecosystem.”
