Investing in an MSc with impact
“I have found great fulfilment in using the knowledge and skills I gained at Bayes Business School, to make a positive impact in my home country and across Africa.”
Kenny-Emmanuel Otshudi is talking about his experiences on Bayes’ MSc Banking and International Finance, and how it shaped not just his career, but his ambitions to make a difference.
Growing up in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Kenny-Emmanuel was inspired by his father and grandfather.
“My grandfather had a 30-year career at the Central Bank of Congo, where he rose through the ranks. I was also influenced by my father’s journey as an entrepreneur, which highlighted the challenges that small businesses face in securing financing in the DRC.”
“This motivated me to learn more about the banking and finance sectors to better understand the tools and strategies that can help businesses. I was looking to gain the knowledge and skills needed to understand the complexities of banking and financial practices in a strong economy like the UK, so that I could go back home and use this experience to benefit my country in the future.”
A prime location and great networking opportunities
When searching for a university for his master’s degree, Kenny-Emmanuel says Bayes stood out for a number of reasons.
“I chose Bayes because of its strong reputation for academic excellence, consistently ranked among the top business schools in Europe. The school has state-of-the-art facilities and a prime location in the heart of the City of London, surrounded by major financial institutions. This vibrant setting creates a business-oriented atmosphere that really stood out to me. I was also impressed by the programme's wide range of modules which aligned with my interests, as well as its emphasis on practical learning applied to real-life scenarios. Additionally, the school organises various events and activities, including seminars and workshops with industry experts, providing great opportunities for networking.”
“Pursuing a finance degree in Europe's financial capital has been inspiring, offering a unique blend of academic rigor, and real-world exposure. I also really enjoyed exploring London's rich history, stunning architecture, and its diverse culture. The fast-paced lifestyle encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace new experiences, ultimately enhancing my education and helping me grow into a more independent and confident individual.”
“Another highlight was meeting my wonderful classmates, who made the experience more enjoyable and less challenging through the fun times we shared both inside and outside of class. We have formed strong bonds and lasting friendships.”

Blending academic theory with practical application
“The best part about the course was that many of our lecturers were former professionals, which emphasised the practical application of theoretical knowledge. With highly interactive lectures and coursework, including real-life scenarios, they allowed us to see the tangible impacts of our learning.”
“One module that particularly stood out to me was Corporate Finance, which provided a thorough understanding of key financial concepts essential for business, such as valuations, capital structure, investment decisions, and risk management. We explored various investment strategies and learnt how to allocate resources effectively to maximise returns while minimising risks. The module also included practical case studies that illustrated how companies apply these principles to enhance their decision-making processes.”
Applying the learning in an international context
“In my home country of the DRC, the financial landscape is still developing. Although some businesses engage in financial activities, the use of more advanced and suitable financial solutions remains very limited compared to more established markets. I think this is mainly due to a strong reliance on traditional banking and a lack of modern financing alternatives. However, there is a growing recognition of the need to improve the country's business climate to better support local businesses and attract foreign investment. Therefore, I believe there is significant potential for development in this area, and that with the right policies and investments, we can create a more dynamic business environment that encourages innovation and growth."
“The course really helped me identify some of the critical gaps in my home country, particularly in the banking and finance sector. It helped me know better what I wanted to do and the impact that I wanted to make back home.”
Investing in Africa’s future
After graduating in 2022, Kenny-Emmanuel returned to Kinshasa in the DRC, determined to put into practice what he had learnt on the course.
Kenny-Emmanuel currently works as an investment analyst at XMSL Capital, a private equity fund manager with offices in Angola, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. They invest in various sectors, including retail and wholesale, manufacturing, hospitality, and transport, and since 2008, they have grown their assets under management to almost $280m USD.
“In my role, I analyse the potential of businesses to provide them with funding and support their growth. My responsibilities include conducting research and due diligence, performing financial analysis, building financial models, assessing risks, drafting proposals and performance reports, and delivering presentations.”
“The master’s provided a strong theoretical foundation and valuable practical case studies. However, I realised that each environment has its own specifics, especially in Africa. Even though I knew I still had much to learn from my time in London, I ended up deciding to follow my heart by returning home to start my professional career here to better understand the local context. Now, after two years of experience, I can say that the journey has been challenging but rewarding.”
A future with impact across the continent
Kenny-Emmanuel is full of optimism about the future, and his goal in making a difference.
“What excites me about the future is the opportunity to continue making a meaningful impact in underserved markets in Africa and transform the lives of millions. At XSML, we are dedicated to supporting talented entrepreneurs in growing their businesses, which, in turn, boosts local economies.”
“Looking ahead, I am optimistic about expanding our positive influence in the region, and why not across the entire continent, fostering a thriving ecosystem for innovation and economic development.”
