From History to International Business: My journey to Bayes and beyond

This blog is my attempt to share my journey, filled with discoveries, growth and excitement for a successful future.

About me: From History to International Business

Francesca Zamboni

Living close to London, I always knew it was my favourite city – and where I wanted to launch my business career. Prior to joining Bayes, I completed a BA in History at Newcastle University, pursuing a long-standing passion from school. While I found this chapter rewarding, I realised I did not want a career in History, and something was missing.

Alongside my BA, I worked part-time at a fintech company, which introduced me to the world of business. I loved exploring this new space and began thinking about how to adapt my humanities background to a business context. After graduating, I took a gap year to gain experience, travel, and reflect on how to achieve my goals. That’s when it became clear: to work in international business and land my dream role at a global firm in London, an MSc in International Business was the ideal next step. Rather than going straight into the world of work, I saw an MSc degree as the best way to gain the knowledge, connections, and career support to guide me towards my goals.

Bayes stood out immediately. The course aligned perfectly with my aspirations, the business school had a strong reputation, impressive rankings, a diverse cohort, and many graduates secured roles at leading firms. And of course, the location, with Bayes being in the City of London, the heart of the financial district, surrounded by professionals and opportunities. Visiting the buildings at Bunhill Row and Finsbury Square, I was struck by how smart and impressive the facilities were, combined with the welcoming atmosphere - it instantly felt like a place where I belonged.

I was incredibly grateful to have received an academic scholarship, which helped fund part of my studies and supported my journey to attend my dream business school.

Growing Through Bayes

Coming from a non-business background, Bayes made the transition incredibly smooth. The MSc in international business combines high-quality teaching, extensive learning resources, career support and valuable networking and social opportunities. From day one, the two-week induction helped me to quickly connect with course mates while equipping me with essential business foundations, from the psychology behind group work to technical skills and advanced Excel training.

Module choices and teaching

One of my favourite things about studying at Bayes is the variety of modules available, allowing you to tailor the course to your interests. Alongside core modules, I chose to explore areas like entrepreneurship, marketing, and fashion brand management, which I found both interesting and relevant. In the second term, you have the chance to choose an international elective to study a module abroad – I am very excited to be going to Paris to study luxury marketing strategy!

Bayes professors bring impressive industry backgrounds into the classroom, providing us with real-world examples from their experience that enrich our learning. They’re incredibly supportive and approachable, whether through office hours, Zoom, or email, and building those connections has been a real highlight.

I like how no two lectures are the same, keeping us engaged. The professors build your confidence and encourage active participation and group discussion. We also benefit from guest speakers across industries, giving us the chance to hear first-hand experiences and ask questions that connect theory to real-world practice.

Favourite projects I have worked on so far

  • In my Entrepreneurship module, my group developed a startup idea and pitched it to real entrepreneurs and venture capitalists – it felt like being on Dragon’s Den and was an incredibly valuable, hands-on experience!
  • As part of my strategy module, we chose a firm of our choice and analysed its current strategy, then presented our recommendations to a panel of strategy consultants. The feedback and discussions deepened my understanding of strategic thinking in practice.
  • Acting on the teachings of global leadership, I particularly enjoyed writing a report evaluating the sustainability of a fashion brand and proposing improvements for long-term success. It was a great way to apply theory to a real-world context.

Societies

Being part of Bayes, you get the exclusive opportunity to be a member of a range of business-focused societies, alongside the many others offered by City St George’s. I’m particularly enjoying being part of the Consulting Society, the Marketing and Strategy Society, and Women in Business. These groups host regular events, including talks, panels, and networking sessions, which have influenced my growing interest in consulting.

Careers Support

The careers support at Bayes has been exceptional. Each course is assigned a dedicated careers advisor, and the wider careers department is always available for one-on-one appointments, offering guidance tailored to different industries and job search stages.

The Bayes careers platform also provides numerous resources, from CV help and practice assessments to video interview tools. Weekly careers events, including interview workshops and company talks, have been incredibly insightful. A standout moment was the careers fair in the first term, where we had the exclusive opportunity to connect with top employers.

Applying for a job in London can be overwhelming, and it used to be a daunting feeling for me, but my careers advisor has supported me through every step, which played a key role in helping me to secure a job offer.

Additional support

As part of your MSc, you have many other avenues of support on offer. This includes your course tutor, course officer, and student representatives, all of whom are approachable and ready to help. The student rep system is a great way for us to have a direct voice to provide feedback and help shape the student experience.

Building long-lasting connections

One of the highlights of my time at Bayes has been forming friendships with classmates from all over the world. Regular group work with different peers has helped expand my network and improve my collaboration skills.

There are also plenty of opportunities to connect with master’s students from other courses, for example, sometimes we study together, and share social events like the welcome drinks and Christmas party.

I’ve also been impressed by the strength of the Bayes alumni network. Former students frequently return to share their career journeys, offering valuable insights and advice, which adds to the supportive and connected community.

On the Road to Success

My time at Bayes is equipping me with the skills and confidence to tackle real-world business challenges. I'm really excited to have already received a job offer, and after graduation, I look forward to launching my career in the consulting industry and continuing life in London – goals that Bayes has helped me prepare for. I’m especially grateful for the global friendships and professional connections I’ve made along the way.

If you’re considering Bayes – take the leap. It’s a place full of opportunity, growth, and an inspiring community. Make the most of it, and you might just land the job you’ve always dreamed of.

I hope to welcome you to the Bayes community soon!
