Overview
Ajay Bhalla
Professor of Family Business and Innovation, Bayes Business School
Founding Director, Master's in Family Business (MFB) Programme
Programme Director, Executive Master's in Leadership (EML) Programme
Ajay Bhalla is Professor of Family Business and Innovation at Bayes Business School, Founding Director of the Master's in Family Business (MFB) programme and Programme Director of the Executive Master’s in Leadership programme. He has held senior academic leadership roles at Bayes, including Head of the Technology and Business Innovation Group, leading major programme development initiatives, and overseeing admissions for the FT-ranked MSc in Management. From 2009 to 2010, he was a visiting scholar at the Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Business at the Indian School of Business (ISB). From 2018 to 2024, he served as a Trustee and Chair of the Research Committee of the Family Business Research Foundation, where he provided strategic leadership to advance research supporting the long-term success of the UK family business sector.
Over 15 years ago, he designed and launched a specialist elective for Next Generation Family Business Leaders at Bayes, now one of the School’s most in-demand courses. In 2026, he founded the Master’s in Family Business (MFB), a highly selective, globally focused programme that brings together next-generation leaders from enterprising families to navigate governance, succession, and long-term value creation in complex ownership settings. These programmes reflect and extend his research on ownership, governance, and leadership across generations.
He is widely recognised as a leading authority on family businesses, and advises boards and senior leaders on governance, succession, and long-term value creation. His scholarship addresses foundational questions about how organisations are owned, governed, and led over time. His work spans family enterprise, employee ownership, innovation, and organisational resilience, with a particular focus on how values, governance structures, and leadership practices shape strategic choices and long-term performance. Across empirical and conceptual studies, he examines how different ownership models influence decision-making, adaptability, and sustainability in complex and uncertain environments.
His research has appeared in leading journals, including Strategic Organization, Journal of World Business, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Operations Management, R&D Management, Small Business Economics, and Asia Pacific Journal of Management. It also includes widely used case studies on family enterprises published by the Family Business Research Foundation.
He is the editor of a forthcoming volume on family business, to be published by Edward Elgar in 2027, which brings together leading scholars and practitioners to advance thinking on ownership, governance, and leadership across generations.
He is co-author of the Amazon best-seller The Resilient Decision-Maker: Navigating Challenges in Business and Life, which translates research insights into practical frameworks for leaders facing disruption and complexity. His work has received multiple research impact and teaching awards, including the Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management for advancing ideas directly relevant to management practice.
He has a long track record of producing impactful research, shaping practice and policy. Ajay has worked on producing research for the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy that directly informed the establishment of a £75 million annual government initiative to expand employee ownership. He also co-led The Ownership Effect Inquiry with the John Lewis Partnership and the Employee Ownership Association, gathering evidence from employee-owned organisations and influencing boardrooms and policymakers on responsible ownership.
Ajay works closely with senior executives and family boards worldwide on governance, succession, leadership development, professionalisation, and strategic renewal. His teaching and advisory work emphasises leadership judgement, governance practice, and resilience capability in unpredictable environments.
His insights are frequently sought by The Financial Times, The Economist, The Times, BBC, Bloomberg, and The Guardian.
