About
Overview
Angela Ellis Paine is Lecturer in Voluntary Sector Management at Bayes Business School. Prior to joining Bayes, Angela was a Research Fellow in both the Third Sector Research Centre and Health Services Management Centre at University of Birmingham.
Angela has been undertaking research on voluntary sector organisations, volunteering and participation for over 20 years. Her particular area of interest is in the idea of voluntary action as situated practice, and the intersection of individuals, organisations and institutions, and how multi-level contexts interact to shape the spaces of participation. Angela has expertise in qualitative research approaches, including longitudinal methods, and is committed to working collaboratively within research.
Angela has been a co-investigator on two Economic and Social Research Council funded studies. Her research has also been funded by independent foundations, national and local government, private, public and voluntary sector organisations. Recent research has included: a study of the third sector and health and care commissioning relationships (funded by the NIHR); community responses to COVID-19 (funded by Local Trust); a study exploring the dynamics of change in voluntary organisations (ESRC); and of discourses of voluntary action at transformational moments in the welfare state (ESRC). She has been involved in numerous evaluations of international, national and local volunteering initiatives.
Angela is chair of the Editorial Management Board and International Advisory Board for the journal Voluntary Sector Review, and was previously co-chair of the Voluntary Sector Studies Network where she continues as moderator of its discussion list and a member of the annual Voluntary Sector and Volunteering Research conference organising committee. Prior to returning to academia, Angela was the Director of the Institute for Volunteering Research, at Volunteering England.
