About
Overview
Costas Andriopoulos is a Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Associate Dean for MBA programmes at Bayes Business School (City, University of London). He joined Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) in September 2014. Before joining Bayes, Costas held a Chair in Strategy at Cardiff Business School, and, prior to that held posts at Brunel Business School, University of Aberdeen Business School and the University of Strathclyde Business School. He has also been a visiting Professor at Said Business School (University of Oxford), Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad), Grenoble Ecole de Management, International Hellenic University, and ALBA Graduate Business School.
Costas ranks in the top 3% globally in innovation management based on citation count. His main research interests focus on how organizational paradoxes enable innovation in the face of changing technological environments. In particular, he studies how entrepreneurial firms in high-velocity markets can excel at both incremental (exploiting current capabilities) and discontinuous innovation (exploring into new space). His research, funded by the Carnegie Trust and the Institute for Innovation & Information Productivity has been published in leading academic journals such as Organization Science, Human Relations, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Long Range Planning, California Management Review, European Journal of Marketing, International Small Business Journal, among others. Costas also played a pivotal role in establishing Bayes X, a prominent research centre dedicated to innovation and disruption.
At Bayes, he has been instrumental in developing and expanding a highly regarded Masters in Entrepreneurship program, where students are encouraged to think about big problems and ways to solve them and take a journey into the 'unknown' by starting their own ventures. Professor Andriopoulos is an award-winning teacher. He is deeply committed to education, equipping founders, and leaders with the tools to think differently, encouraging them to take calculated risks, and guiding them to make decisions that lead to meaningful and impactful innovations. He teaches the New Venture Creation course at the M/EMBA and GMBA programmes at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass). He has taught executive and senior leadership teams how to manage organizational change and innovation, high-performing teams, entrepreneurial/design thinking, strategic paradoxes and breakthrough innovation. In his teaching, he systematically intertwines theory and practical application (e.g. teaching cases, simulations, in-class exercises).
He has co-authored the textbook “Managing Change, Creativity and Innovation” (5th Edition, Sage, 2025) and authored “Purposeful Curiosity” (Machete, 2022; Yellow Kite, 2023), a popular book that delves into the transformative power of purpose-driven curiosity for success and fulfilment.
Additionally, he is the Director of Avyssos Advisors Ltd., a consultancy specializing in innovation management. You can follow him on Instagram @prof.costas. For more information, you can also check his personal website: www.andriopoulos.org
