Research
Research Summary
In one line of work, I examine relationship formation and consequences. I focus on such relations as alliances, buyer-supplier ties, board memberships, and workplace interactions. In recent publications, I studied the consequences of interfirm R&D alliances for new product development (2016, Research Policy), the emergence of buyer-seller relationships in online markets (2016, Academy of Management Journal), and the reconfiguration of alliance portfolios (2019, Strategic Management Journal).
In a second line of work, I examine the drivers and effects of employee effort and its correlates. For example, I studied the implications of work effort for employee outcomes (2019, Industrial and Labor Relations Review), the performance effects of incentive plans (2022, Journal of Management), the implications of work intensity (2023, British Journal of Industrial Relations), and the determinants of employees' competitive actions (2024, Academy of Management Journal).
