Overview
Ioannis is the Associate Dean for Employability and Engagement; an Onassis Associate Professor of Shipping Finance and Sustainability; and the Shipping and Energy Research Programme Lead at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), City St George's, University of London. He acts as a Principal Academic Adviser at the UK Department for Transport.
He is a Co-Investigator, leading the “Digitisation, Maritime Operations, and Finance” theme, of the UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub (UK-MaRes Hub). This is a £21.3 million national research partnership that aims to accelerate the decarbonisation and elimination of air pollution from maritime activity in ports and at sea. Ioannis is also the UK Academic Director of the Greek Energy Forum.
Ioannis studied Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (BEng and MEng). He holds an MSc in Shipping, Trade and Finance; an MRes in Finance; and a PhD in Finance from Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), City St George's, University of London.
He joined The Costas Grammenos Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance in 2013 as a PhD researcher. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Digital Currencies (for an EPSRC-BoE project); a Visiting Lecturer in Finance; as an Onassis* Fellow in Shipping Analytics, Finance, and Fintech; an Onassis* Lecturer in Finance; and a Lecturer in Shipping Finance and Analytics. Furthermore, he was the Director of the MSc in Energy, Trade and Finance from August 2021 to July 2023.
Ioannis lectures in Data Analytics for Energy, Shipping, Trade and Finance; Mathematics for Management and Finance; Research Methods and Professional Skills; and Shipping Economics and Finance at BSc, MSc, and GMBA programmes. His primary areas of research are shipping finance and economics with a focus on sustainability. His work has been published in leading shipping, energy, commodity, and finance academic journals.
Ioannis has worked as a Supervising Naval Architect and Marine Engineer at the construction of Peers 2 and 3 at the Piraeus Container Terminal in Greece and as a consultant in the shipping industry.
*The Onassis Foundation had launched a partnership with Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), funding a fellowship/lectureship/senior lectureship/associate professorship in areas related to Shipping Analytics, Finance, Sustainability, and Fintech from December 2019 to December 2026. The position has been taken up by Dr Ioannis Moutzouris. The Onassis Foundation continues to support the Financial, International Trade, and Shipping sectors, in which Aristotle Onassis himself excelled.
