Overview
Dr Sara Jones specialises in applied creativity, human–computer interaction design, technology, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Sara’s research and teaching at the intersection between applied creativity and digital technologies explores two strongly inter-related questions. The first considers the impact of digital technologies, including generative artificial intelligence, on human creative processes. The second explores creative approaches to the design of socio-technical systems that can amplify human creative potential and professional judgment in relation to real world complex problems, while foregrounding diversity and cultural situatedness. Her methodological expertise lies in creative user-centred design – an approach that finds new ways to design, develop and evaluate interactive systems and artefacts through interpretive reasoning and co-creation.
Current projects are investigating the adoption of artificial intelligence in SMEs and social enterprises in countries such as Ghana, examining both opportunities for technological leapfrogging and the contextual challenges faced by social enterprises in the Global South. This builds on Sara’s work as Co-Investigator of the £3m Innovation for African Universities (IAU) programme, funded by the British Council (2021 – 2023) with the aim of strengthening entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems and improving student employability outcomes in universities in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
Recent related projects include the £0.5m Boosting Resilience programme, funded by Arts Council England (2017 – 2019) to build resilience in the arts and cultural sector, and Creative Spark projects in Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, funded by British Council (2018 - 2023) to use a combination of arts-based methods, applied creativity and business thinking to deliver training in creative entrepreneurship to academics, students and young entrepreneurs.
Prior to that, Sara’s significant research projects employed creative design techniques in the development of complex socio-technical systems in domains such as energy and air traffic control, underpinned by foundational work on trust in e-commerce.
As Director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Creativity in Professional Practice (C2P2) since 2020, Co-investigator for the £10m transdisciplinary DIVERSE Centre for Doctoral Training since 2024, current Interim Director of the multi-disciplinary Institute for Creativity and AI (ICAI) at City St George’s, and Course Director of the ground-breaking interdisciplinary Masters in Innovation, Creativity and Leadership (2010 – 2025), Sara has deep understanding and experience of leading and participating in collaborative and interdisciplinary research and education that explores how AI and other digital systems can amplify human creativity and professional judgment in the context of real world complex challenges.
Sara has published more than 130 peer-reviewed papers in academic journals and conference proceedings, supervised 9 PhD students to completion, taught a wide range of different courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and consulted for a number of major organisations.

Sara's research takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of applied creativity and design, and their relationships with innovation, especially digital innovation, leadership and learning; Sara works with colleagues from disciplines including computer science, engineering, law, psychology, health and the arts.

Education
Overview
Since its inception in autumn 2010, Sara has been Course Director for the unique, interdisciplinary Masters in Innovation, Creativity and Leadership (MICL). This course was run from 2010 – 2015 through the Interdisciplinary Centre for Creativity in Professional Practice at City University, and moved in the year 2015-16 to the Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), to become a full part of the Specialist Masters programme by September 2016.
Since 2008, Sara has been developing innovative methods for teaching in relation to creativity and the design of interactive systems. From 2008-10, Sara received a grant of £64K from JISC to investigate the use of blended physical and digital spaces in the teaching of creative design, and in 2010, a further £3K from City University to develop and disseminate the findings from this project across the University.
Prior to that, Sara lead and taught for modules on Requirements Engineering, User Interface Design, Object-Oriented Analysis and Design, Knowledge Engineering, Formal Notations and Models, and System Design and Development.
Sara has supervised numerous projects at both Masters and undergraduate levels on themes relating to innovation, creativity and leadership as well as human-centred systems, business systems analysis and design, information systems, software engineering, computer science, cognitive science, software systems for the arts and media and combined studies degrees.
