About
Overview
Yao Shi has completed her work as a postdoctoral researcher for two years since May 2024, as well as completed one academic year as a visiting lecturer from September 2025. She gained a two-year postdoc funding from the finance theme of the UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub, co-funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Department for Transport. The research was on the finance and economics aspects of the decarbonisation of the shipping industry. The work covered a wide range of topics, including finance, economics, management, policy, and sustainability.
She holds a PhD in Science and Technology Policy from the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex. She previously worked for four years under the digital society theme of the Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions (CREDS), funded by the EPSRC. Her earlier research examined how information and communication technologies (ICT) influence energy demand, focusing on two areas: teleworking and ICT-related firm behaviours.
She has published in high-impact journals, including Energy Economics, International Journal of Finance and Economics, Transportation Research Part D, Transport Policy, and Energy and Buildings. Her work carries strong policy impact and public significance. She has advised the UK Department for Transport and the International Maritime Organization on shipping decarbonisation policies and has published a series of policy bulletins and news articles related to her research. Her publications have attracted broad attention on Twitter, and she has presented her work at various international conferences.
She was also a visiting lecturer at Bayes Business School, where she taught Principles of Economics, and Finance and Investment. Previously, she taught mathematics and statistics modules in the Economics Department at the University of Sussex for three years and helped launch the Maths Tutor Programme at the University of Sussex Business School. Prior to her PhD, she achieved the best overall academic performance in her master’s degree in Finance at the University of Nottingham (UK).
