Hi, I’m Sulayman. My journey in the charity sector began as a volunteer, simply wanting to help those in need. What started as a small commitment quickly turned into a deep passion for making a difference. I fell in love with the impact that charitable work can have on individuals and communities, and I knew this was the path I wanted to pursue as a career. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to now be working as a Community Fundraiser at Shelter UK, where I support vital work in tackling homelessness and housing injustice.

Why I chose MSc in Charity Marketing and Fundraising

Choosing to study for a Charities master’s degree was out of my comfort zone but a much-needed step in reaching my dreams. I have seen firsthand the impact that nonprofits can have and how that to create lasting, systemic change, it’s not just about raising funds - it’s about strong leadership, strategic thinking, and driving sustainable growth within the sector.

I wanted to build on my experience and gain the knowledge and skills needed to take on a leadership role in the future, allowing me to support even more people at a higher level. Which is why I choose to take the leap and push myself to do the MSc in Charity Marketing and Fundraising.

When I came across Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE) master’s programme at Bayes, it felt like the perfect opportunity to challenge myself. To build on my skills and deepen my impact, I knew I needed to continue learning. MSc in Charity Marketing and Fundraising gave me the tools to think more strategically, lead with confidence, and develop innovative solutions to challenges in the sector.

Another reason why I considered further education was my faith has also played a big part in this decision. Seeking knowledge is highly valued in Islam, and charity is a fundamental pillar of our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that the best people are those who bring the most benefit to others, and I believe that by furthering my education, I can become better equipped to serve communities in need. Studying this course isn’t just about my career—it’s about fulfilling a deeper purpose of helping others and making a meaningful impact in society. It goes right into the core of who I am and where I want to go in the future.

My Bayes charity master’s experience

One of the biggest highlights has been connecting with like-minded individuals who share the same drive for change. The shared energy, passion, and exchange of ideas have been truly inspiring, reinforcing the power of collaboration in the non-profit world.
I want to be part of shaping the future of nonprofits, ensuring they continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of those they serve. By investing in my own learning, I know I’m also investing in the future of the communities and causes I care about most.

The holistic approach the course adopts where we learn about other functions in charity leadership has really widened my view of the charity sector and my own role in it.

Beyond networking, this journey has helped me develop a strategic mindset when it comes to problem-solving and tackling challenges. Learning how to approach issues with a more analytical and structured perspective has been a game-changer for me. These insights are shaping how I work in my current role and will no doubt influence my future career in the sector.

My career and the future ahead

In my current role, I have the privilege of working with schools, faith groups, and corporate partners, helping them engage with our cause and raise funds to support Shelter’s mission. Beyond that, my role allows me to be involved in a wide range of income generation activities, from retail fundraising and trust applications to high-value partnerships and philanthropy. The diversity of my work means that no two days are the same, and I’m constantly learning, adapting, and finding new ways to drive support for Shelter UK.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing, particularly in leadership development and exploring innovative ways to tackle complex social issues. Working in fundraising has shown me just how powerful communities can be when they come together for a cause, and I want to keep harnessing that power to create even more impact.
